There are narrow drains and sharper rocks the closer you get to the village. Keep your villa doors and windows closed when you are not around, the long-tailed macaques like to get inside and raid your belongings for food. It is perfectly safe for female travelers here, but do behave appropriately. Don't wear bikinis or skimpy clothing, tight-fitting and low-cut t-shirts. The bus to Berastagi is most likely to have a blaring sound system and a boom box so bring some good earplugs if you're not into Indonesian love pop videos. Travelling around Sumatra is sometimes difficult. The island is huge, the roads are bad and busy with lorries and motorbikes. Public transport is limited and an adventure in itself. Get prepared for endless hours in packed busses with drivers driving like crazy. Flying is the most convenient way to get around Sumatra. All the major cities on Sumatra have international airports. For your first leg, at h arriving in Medan, going to Bukit Lawang forget about any formal transportation services, just walk out the airport, at the formal taxi stand outside the Airport turn left. Pass the next formal taxi stand and all free taxi drivers will be waiting for you to drop you in Bukit Lawang at a reasonable cost per car of something like Rp if not less.
